The Brahma Kamal plant found in Himalayas is often mixed with the plant seen growing on window sill in homes. Named Saussurea Obvallata it is the plant growing in hilly regions and not found here. The original name of this plant what we call Brahma Kamal is a flowering cactus, Epiphyllum Oxypetallum, Orchid cactus which blooms at night. The blooms are very big and grow as extensions from the leaves itself.
There is a magical aura about this flower as old folk tales and village lore goes the flower is thought to bring in loads of goodluck and prosperity to the home it flowers in. It is rare to see the blooms and even though there are many of my garden care simplified blog followers who are sharing their photos regularly since past many years, as they get blooms regularly and even in few months, the flower actually , a cactus, flowers in fourteen to fifteen years after the plant matures. Well, yes, today forced flowering is working and people once they know how the flowering triggers follow this and they get to see these Awesum blooms!
It is believed to bring in loads of good luck and prosperity and a home where the flowers bloom is very auspicious and lucky. The process takes quite some weeks from the fleshy leaves to bring out a bud and then the heavy bud to grow and finally open one magical night into a heavenly beauty! Flowers are large sized and beautiful. People, in India, often do religious rituals, offer puja, invite friends for this special sighting and offer the flower to Gods. The Brahma Kamal plant is very rare and has been declared as rare species amongst plants.
This is commonly known as Brahma Kamal but it really is a variety of cactus. Commonly termed as Saussurea obvallata. Also named night blooming Phyllocactus Many people have this plant for religious purposes. There is a belief that the one who gets to the blooming of flower in this plant is very lucky. And I really do hope even I get to see the bloom of my brahma kamal plant.
Also known as Epiphyllum oxypetalum plant, Queen of the Night, Duchman's Pipe, Night blooming Cereus. With so many names it is a beautiful plant with green elongated leaves.
This plant has some medicinal properties also which I have not personally used, but read about. Also some say the flowers are edible and especially people mention about the sweet heavenly fragrance of the Brahma Kamal flowers. My experience with this plant goes back to when I viewed the flowers of this plant at my neighbour's. It is really a very spiritual, surreal experience. They had two flowers and I witnessed the full bloomed flower which was of white colour. The size of the brahma kamal flower is approximately the size of our palm.
Right since then the search began to find this plant for my garden. On inquiring from them I came to know that it had bloomed after some years. It is known that the flowers bloom at night say from evening and remains open only till the next morning. The wait is so long but the blooms are definitely worth the wait. The leaves are flattened elongated one and new leaves come from them. Even the flowers grow at the tip of leaves.
So the obsession continues after more than seven years of struggling to grow different Brahma Kamal plants. waiting for the heavenly mystical experience, the fragrance, the size, the colour, the shape , in fact the whole Brahma Kamal flower is unique and blooms only at night. The Brahma kamla flower begins to open after sunset and night sets in and reaches its maximum beauty and the flower is fully open by eight and remains till early morning only. If you miss it, it is gone, the flower is spent by sunrise.
Leaving aside the five previous Brahma Kamal plants who are in growing mode, I look at them and they stare, no response, music therapy, cutting, repotting , and feedings, tried it all!
Obsession continues with this mystical flower, and with so many years of gardening successes to bring flowers to bloom, here I am yet to see these!
The flower in Hinduism is named after the Lord Brahma, the God of creation.
Inspired by my love, and obsession over this magical mystical flower, Brahma Kamal, waiting, hoping...one day to experience this magic...The Brahma Kamal! is this collection of exotic blooms Chinese symbol goodluck.
